CLAMS![]() Tridacna Clams.
Clams are a very misunderstood reef aquarium creature. I am always hearing reef keepers state that clams need metal halide lighting only (maximas and croceas are demanding of high light) and I hear people say that they need to be target fed as well.
Clams get 95% or more of their energy from light, they do filter the water, taking nitrates out (which is a nice bonus) but the size of food particles they utilize is smaller than what the human eye can see. Anotherwords blowing some brine shrimp or other type of powdered coral food at your clams will only result in the clam rejecting and making a cough like expelling of the food (which most people assume is the clam pumping the food through itself, quite the opposite actually!)
In short clams are a great addition to a well maintained reef aquarium, if you are experienced in keeping chalices, SPS corals and have success with them then a healthy clam from us will do very well for you.
